Orbital sunlight reflection programme
Assessing whether controlled reflection of sunlight from space could become a practical and responsible technology.
Concept
The concept under study uses a reflector in space to redirect a portion of sunlight towards a selected area on Earth. Sai Craft is examining the feasibility of controlled reflection and its potential relevance to terrestrial sunlight applications.
Near-term objective
Our immediate objective is to establish the feasibility of a small, controlled orbital sunlight-reflection demonstrator. Proposed validation would include independent measurement of reflected light and verification that illumination can be safely terminated. Progression would depend on technical findings, environmental assessment and applicable authorisations.
Development approach
We propose to begin with feasibility analysis and controlled ground testing. Progression to a space-based demonstration would depend on the results, engineering readiness, resources and required authorisations. Later applications would be assessed against demonstrated performance and practical economics.
Responsible development
The feasibility assessment should address pointing control, unintended illumination, implications for astronomy and aviation, and the spacecraft lifecycle. These considerations form part of deciding whether and how a demonstration should proceed.
Current status
Sai Craft is undertaking exploratory programme development and technical discussions. Mission configuration, launch arrangements and timelines remain to be established.
